Move Existing Web Site Procedure

People moving boxes

Moving your existing website to our servers and changing your address.

1. Move your files over to our server

We will give you a login which allows you to move files to a server. Begin by moving your existing website over to this location. This insures that when your domain (i.e. www.site.com) begins to point to our server you won't experience any downtime.

2. Initiate the domain transfer

When you tell us that you want to move your site we will notify your current hosting company to begin transferring over control of your domain (i.e. www.site.com). Depending on how they operate, this usually involves them contacting a mainstream registrar such as Register.com or Network Solutions. This takes a few hours to complete.

3. Confirm the transfer

Soon after making the request, you will receive an email asking your permission to change control of your domain. This is email is a security precaution to deter domain theft. After you authorize the transfer, the domain will begin pointing to its new home within a few days. However, some servers which are not kept up to date may continue to direct web visitors to your old website location for up to a month. Therefore, it is important that you have both sites running simultaneously for about a month.

4. When you ready, notify your previous provider

Let your previous provider know that you wish to discontinue using their service.
